Frequently Asked Questions
A mobile wallet (sometimes called a digital wallet) is an encrypted app on your smartphone that securely stores payment card information. Debit cards, credit cards, loyalty cards, store cards, gift cards and coupons are just some of the information that can be added. This allows you to pay for goods and services without fumbling through your bag or physical wallet to find your cards.
There are a few different technologies that power digital wallets. Apple Pay and Google pay use Near Field Communication, or NFC. This allows two devices to exchange information if they’re placed close to each other. To use one of these digital wallets, the merchant or service provider must have compatible card readers at checkout. Samsung Pay uses NFC and also Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST). This technology creates a magnetic signal, much like when you swipe the magnetic stripe on a credit card. The signal is transmitted to the payment terminal’s card reader.
Mobile wallets are a convenient, touch-free way to pay. No need to fumble for your wallet, especially when you don’t have your wallet with you. As long as you have your payment card set up on your mobile device, you can pay with your smartphone at merchants or service providers that accept mobile wallet payments.
Mobile wallets are also more secure. Mobile wallets utilize encryption keys (also called tokenization) which keeps your card information a secret when you make a purchase. When you use your mobile wallet, your card does not come into contact with a device, lowering the risk that a skimmer could collect the card information.
Mobile wallets are fast and convenient. Spend less time digging for your card. Simply place your phone near the payment and complete your payment in seconds.
First you’ll want to select the wallet that’s right for you. This will likely depend on the type of device you have. Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay are all major players. Check to see if any of these are pre-loaded on your device. If not, you’ll want to download the app.
Open the app and follow the prompts to add a new card to the wallet. Some apps offer a photo option which will scan your card and automatically add the details. Otherwise simply enter in the card information. You’ll want to read and agree to the terms and conditions presented. Make sure to select your Webster Debit Mastercard as your default payment card.
Once you receive the notification that your card has been accepted, you may begin using your phone to make payments anywhere you see the symbol for your mobile wallet app. Simply open the mobile wallet app, select the card you want to use, verify using your passcode and hold the phone near the payment terminal.
